In 2025, pupils explored themes of bravery and standing out and fitting in. M6’s production of A Tiger’s Tale told the story of a brave acrobatic family who when against the grain when they adopted a tiger cub and brought it to Yorkshire!
With artist and puppeteer Thomas Byrne, children discussed what it means to stand out or fit in, using Laura Knight’s painting The Trick Act. The painting was brought from Touchstone’s collection into each school. The children then created colourful masks in pairs by asking questions to learn more about their partners and illustrated their responses.
Poet Elmi Ali, guided children in exploring the themes of bravery and strength through creative writing activities. The children worked in pairs to write poems, which were then combined into collaborative class poems.
Images of each mask were taken by photographer Alan Hamer and compiled into collage banners. These were displayed outside Broadfield Park as part of our Side-by-Side Festival. The poems were compiled into a zine for people to take and read. You can access the finished banners and zine below.
