Create Rochdale CPD: Exploring Local Heritage, Global History and Personal Identities

Exploring Rochdale’s local heritage provides a gateway into global topics and an opportunity for children to explore their own identity. Join this free CPD event to discover the range of education opportunities provided by our local heritage organisations and events.

Aimed at Rochdale primary school teachers but open to any professionals with an interest in the topic.

Agenda

1:00 – 1.30pm Lunch and Networking
A buffet lunch will be provided on arrival.

1:30 – 1.40pm Welcome and introductions
Helen Thackray, Create Rochdale Programme Manager will open the event and invite all attendees to introduce themselves.

1.40 – 1.50pm Presentation from Cartwheel Arts
Heywood based arts organisation, Cartwheel Arts will introduce their Crafting Heritage project which has explored the heritage crafts flourishing within Rochdale’s communities with experience of forced migration. The project has culminated in a unique learning resource tailored for primary schools in Rochdale.

1.50 – 2.00pm Presentation from Touchstones Museum
Whilst Touchstones Museum and Gallery is closed for redevelopment, the learning team are delivering activities and events in the local community including lending schools boxes of replica items and delivering accompanying workshops on world and local history. Find out more about our offer including our new loans boxes ‘Cotton is King’, ‘Rocks, Fossils and Minerals’ and ‘The Amazing Maya’.

2.00 – 2.10pm Presentation from Rochdale Town Hall
The newly renovated Rochdale Town Hall offers a range of learning experiences and resources for EYFS to KS3 including resource bags for children with SEND. Find out more in this short presentation from Community and Volunteer Officer, Cat Jessop.

2.10 – 2.20pm Presentation from Rochdale Heritage Open Days
Heritage Open Days takes place every year in September and provides opportunities for children to access heritage they might not otherwise experience. Nicola Walker from Rochdale Development Agency will present the opportunities to get involved in this year’s event.

2.20 – 2.30pm Presentation from Rochdale Pioneers Museum
2025 is the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives so there’s even more reason to teach pupils about Rochdale’s history of founding the co-operative movement. Find out more about the learning workshops, events and resources at Pioneers Museum with Liz McIvor, Co-operative Heritage Trust Manager.

2.30 – 2.40pm Opportunity for questions to presenters and discussion

2.50 – 3.50pm Practical workshop from Cartwheel Arts: Crafting Heritage School Resource
Cartwheel Arts will deliver an hour long training session introducing their new KS2 Crafting Heritage School Resource and showing how it can be used in the classroom. The resources includes craft activities and learning opportunities that contribute to celebrating and sustaining local cultural heritage which might otherwise be at risk of becoming endangered.

3.50 – 4.00pm Wrap Up
Final reflections and an opportunity to give feedback on the event.
