Secondary school teachers and Create Rochdale partners from across the borough of Rochdale are invited to a free CPD session to explore how local high schools can collaborate with each other and with arts organisations to develop cultural education opportunities for secondary school pupils.

What you will gain from attending:

  • Information about local organisations and opportunities that support the development of pupils cultural capital
  • An understanding of how cultural education can be embedded across the curriculum and how it can support your school targets and priorities
  • The opportunity to discuss the challenges and barriers to delivering cultural education and how we might work together to remove these barriers

Agenda:

1pm – 1.30pm Lunch and networking.

1.30pm Welcome and introduction from Helen Thackray, Creative Partnerships Manager at Create Rochdale and Erica Fields, EMA Teaching & Learning Adviser (KS2-4)at Rochdale Borough Council.

1.40pm Creativity, Wellbeing and Attendance

Simon De Courcey, Director of Cultural Capital to share how Falinge Park High School have used the Be Well Data to steer new wellbeing focused creative activities in their school.

Helen Thackray to present on behalf of  Hopwood Hall College  information about the Saturday Arts Clubs running at the college and how they are meeting the needs of secondary school pupils struggling in school or not attending.

2.00pm Confidence, Communication and Oracy

Ella Dufton, Speak Up Project Manager at The Lowry will introduce the creative youth voice project being delivered in some Rochdale secondary schools.  

Bernadette Colligan, Engagement and Communication Officer at Rochdale Borough Council will talk about opportunities for secondary pupils to get involved in Deep Democracy activities and influence policy.

2.20pm Developing local and global connections 

Factory International to introduce their secondary schools programme and the outcomes of their yearlong partnership with Falinge Park High School.

Rochdale Development Agency to provide a brief overview of cultural place making activities in the borough that local secondary schools can get involved in.

2.40pm Break

2.50pm Facilitated Discussion:

What are the barriers to delivering high quality cultural education in Rochdale secondary schools?

What are the opportunities for working collaboratively to improve cultural education?

3.40pm Final round of reflections and actions inspired by the event

4.00pm End of Session.
