Aliyah returned to the arts and heritage store to facilitate a workshop for the community curators. As part of Aliyah’s installation, she is creating macrame bags for the ceramics to sit in that will be suspended from the ceiling in the dining room.
With the creation of the work being very collaborative from the start of the project, Aliyah wanted to continue this right through to the macrame. The community curators were able to choose different coloured ropes to create their own bag. They were encouraged to be a free as they like and create something that they would be able to point out as their own, once the work is installed.
Aliyah gave a demonstration of how to construct the bag and explained how to create the knots which is called the lovers knot. The group all created their own bag and were shown how the ceramics would sit within the sculptural macrame net.
The group fully threw themselves into the process and really enjoyed it. There was silence whilst everyone crafted away, but there was also joy and celebrations as the knots came together and the rows were completed. It was great for everyone to learn a new skill. Everyone was very proud and got a photo of themselves with their new macrame creation. The next time we will see them will be when they are installed in the dining room!
