Our annual Dumping Day took place at the Ukrainian Club for the third year in a row! The Ukrainian club and community have been fantastic in supporting Touchstones whilst the building is closed for redevelopment.
This year, we had lots of different dumplings from across the world that were free for everyone to try, these included: Puff Puff, Varenyky, Mutabak, Znood el Sit, Debla and Gyozas. It was a fantastic mix of sweet and savoury dumplings provided by local people and businesses in Rochdale.
We enjoyed music from a Ukrainian duo which acted as a backdrop to people eating chatting and taking part in one of the creative activities. People were invited to plant basil seeds, make an embroidery piece, create their own cyanotype coasters and making their own sunflower seed dumpling to take home and plant. These activities were provided by Touchstones staff who work in the collections team and the educational team. We also had a wishing wall for people to put their own ideas of what they would like the new Dining Room to offer when Touchstones reopens. We had collections display, showing plans for the new space and showing exhibits from collections – historic seed packets, pressed flowers and sculptures. As an additional bonus we had our 3D printing expert Ric hand printing tiny fidget toy dumplings for people to take home. We were also joined by local community group Knitty Gritty who helped people to have a go at knitting their own dumpling or simply have a go at knitting and crochet.
Our Community Curators also helped with the running of the day, from serving dumplings, greeting people, supporting the activities and gathering feedback. Events like this wouldn’t be possible without their support and hard work. If you missed it, don’t worry we will be back next year with lots of free dumplings and activities!
