A chilly day for a boat trip!
The volunteers enjoyed a trip to Hollingworth Lake, it was a chilly October day but the rain held off.
In the Water Activity Centre the group were given a talk and explored the Heritage boards and timeline, providing a fascinating insight to the history of Hollingworth Lake and the buildings surrounding it.
Hollingworth Lake’s history is deeply intertwined with the industrial and recreational development of the Rochdale Canal. Originally constructed in 1800 as a reserviour to supply water to the canal, the lake quickly became a popular desitation for locals and visitors. The arrival of the railway in 1839 further boosted its popularity, leading to the establishment of hotels and the creation of a rowing club. The lake was repurposed as a country park in 1974, where it has since become a thriving center for water sports and other actitivites.
We then had a trip around the Lake on the Passenger Boat the ‘Lady Katherine, where the group were shown the locations of buildings and events from history.
