Exploring the treasures of the Arts & Heritage Collections

The volunteers had a fascinating tour exploring the Arts & Heritage Resource Centre which houses a varied collection of art works (including paintings and sculpture) and Museum Objects.

It also houses the Local Studies Archives Collection, which includes local authority records, family papers, company records and of course, the collection the volunteers are working on at the moment – the Co-Operative Archives!

One of our Collections Assistant gave the group a tour, taking them through each unit and allowing them time to look around and take in the wonderful history surrounding them. They found the tour extremely interesting and were impressed with the array of objects donated to the museum.

One of the group (who hails from Mauritius) spoke about how some of the items took him back to his childhood and reminded him of his time spent with his mother collecting shells (he remembers being about seven and sitting on his mum’s shoulders and how the water would be so high up to his mother’s waist whilst she carried him and a bucket, collecting ‘Zoro Zoro’ (type of shellfish) for their next meal. There were some old irons (ironing) that reminded him of home which belonged to his grandad.
