The group were joined by Vanina an Argentinian artist who had participated in Cartwheel Arts Crafting Heritage project. The project was a two-year exploration of the rich heritage crafts, flourishing within Rochdale’s vibrant communities of people with experience of forced migration. Vanina introduced the group to the context and history of weaving in Argentina and Patagonia, before sharing how to make a simple small weaving.
As we wove our own creations, we reflected on the rich history and shared knowledge of weaving across cultures. Vanina discussed the differences in pattern and styles of poncho cloth woven throughout Argentina’s regions, and the group in turn discussed the use of pattern in Malaysia, from how certain designs were only for the Royal Family to memories of weaving belts for shalwar trousers in Pakistan, and Rochdale’s own history of textile mills and industrial manufacturing of cloth.
Alongside food, the Dining Room will be a space for groups to get together, talk, share ideas and be creative. Having Vanina visit gave us a taster of how artists might occupy the Dining Room, giving workshops and sharing skills to the public once it is open.
