Summer School at Matthew Moss Youth Centre
This August, we held our second Summer School at Matthew Moss Youth Centre with textile artist Ibukun Baldwin. Over three days, we upcycled unworn volunteer t-shirts, starting off by applying a textured base print with stencils to cover up the original logos.
On the first day, we also played a team building game making hammer bead artworks, we had 2 minutes to build up our image before they were passed on to the next person to work on, and we did this process until collaborative artworks were created.
On the second day, we collaborated to print a huge patchwork piece of denim fabric with different colours & textures making sure we got a good balance of colours to produce a vibrant and cohesive print. Ibukun will use this fabric to produce big seat cushions that will decorate some benches at Matthew Moss Youth Centre. On our t-shirts, we created baking paper stencils by drawing a design out, cutting it out from the centre and then applying fabric paint with a sponge.
The whole of the third day was dedicated to finishing off our t-shirt designs. We started off by learning how to use linocut blocks to create detailed designs. We all drew out a design and then spent the morning cutting away the lino block to create a re-usable printing block. After lunch we inked up and tested our linos, made any final cuts and then printed onto our t-shirts.
It was an amazing way to spend summer; a joyful celebration of creativity, teamwork, and transformation, leaving behind not just beautifully upcycled t-shirts, but another year of lasting memories and new connections!
